TIMMINS, ON: 聽Fiona Bird鈥檚 mission in life is simple, she wants to save the world one person at a time.

Hailing from Peawanuck, Bird is a second year Social Service Worker student at 六开彩开奖结果 with big dreams, rooted in her experiences as an Indigenous woman and a genuine vision for helping others.

鈥淭here are people suffering from homelessness, mental health issues, and addictions. Inter-generational trauma is one of the main roots for a lot of Indigenous peoples suffering,鈥� said Bird.聽 鈥淭he trauma is deep, it goes way back, and once we鈥檙e able to break those cycles the healing journey will accelerate.鈥�

For Bird, choosing to attend 六开彩开奖结果 was her first step in breaking that cycle, gaining the skills she needs to help others, especially those she sees so commonly in and around the community.

鈥淚 want to help the vulnerable populations, the ones who are dealing with different social problems,鈥� said Bird. 鈥淚鈥檓 specifically focused on the Indigenous population, because those are the people that I often see around in the downtown area of Timmins.鈥�

鈥淚 feel that if people were educated on what these people are going through, there would be more reasons to create resources for them, to support them,鈥� added Bird.

For Bird, Northern was a natural fit, a place she felt she would feel not only comfortable as a student, but culturally supported as she undertakes her studies.

鈥淚t鈥檚 not just because the program is great 鈥� and the program is great 鈥� I chose Northern because there was no other choice for me, but to come here,鈥� said Bird. 鈥淚鈥檝e always wanted to come here; I鈥檝e always wanted to be a student here at Northern. I feel like Northern cares about me, not just me, but Indigenous peoples, there is an inclusive feeling, I feel great about it, I feel included.鈥�

Hands on, practical education, experienced faculty and solid interpersonal relationships played a large role in Bird鈥檚 choice to attend Northern.

鈥淚 know who my classmates are, with less than 25 students in my classes, it鈥檚 a very genuine experience, a genuine connection with my classmates, with my teachers and if you鈥檙e having issues, you can talk to your classmates, because you already have that familiarity.鈥�

With plans to earn her diploma, attend University and gain her masters, Bird is looking ahead with a doctorate in mind 鈥� for her, education is the key to making her dreams come true.

鈥淓ducation is everything, it is the key to playing a role in making the changes I鈥檇 like to see in the world,鈥� said Bird. 鈥淚f I can lift myself up, then I can help uplift others 鈥� it won鈥檛 be easy, but you have to hold that in your mind, how can I help these people, how can I provide them with opportunity and a future.鈥�

鈥淲here else are they going to go? 鈥淲hen you are at your lowest point, the only way out is up. I know this from my own life experiences.鈥� added Bird. 鈥淭ogether we can create lasting change and make sure no one is forgotten by society.鈥�
